Music and Worship Ministry

Congregation members at Second Baptist Church come from varied musical backgrounds and worship traditions. Through the use of a wide-range of musics, arts, and other creative acts of worship, our goal is to provide worship opportunities that embody the whole nature of God where worshippers can interact with the Holy through mind, heart, soul, and body.

As a general framework we use the church year to organize our broader liturgical strokes. Each Sunday, worship is based on Scripture and a given theme, which is tied closely to the selected Scripture references, the liturgical season/day, and the main emphasis of the sermon. The music and worship at Second Baptist reflect the church body, for we are a progressive, inclusive, and open-minded congregation. We are a people greatly shaped by our Baptist worship heritage, particularly the idea of liturgical freedom.

Simultaneously we also maintain and nurture a strong ecumenical environment through the use of three main sources: the church year, the best of ancient Christian worship traditions, and vital and faithful ecumenical resources that speak to, from, and over against our culture. Additionally, we are a people who find serious examination of our faith an expectation of God. We express our belief in varied ways through creative and responsive acts to God. We recognize the legitimacy of many worship traditions within a greater Christian context. This plays out week after week at Second Baptist, for the Spirit of God moves in ways familiar and strange, popular and eccentric, ancient and new. Worship at Second B cannot be captured in one hour on one Sunday. The worship life of God at Second B attempts to capture the essence of heaven and the vast nature of God over weeks, months, and years. If we find that we Christians, can only feel comfortable worshipping God through a single style of music, form of prayer, practice of communion, interpretation of Scripture every Sunday, we will discover we have missed the uncomfortable way of the Gospel. We look forward to seeing you and invite you to join us for worship on Sundays at 8:30 AM and 10:45
