A History of Ministry at Second Baptist |
|||
| Second Baptist Church has been focused on thriving, inclusive
and Spirit-led ministry since its inception in 1958. The church began
as a mission of First Baptist Church. Our first building was located at
53rd and Elgin, which was the growing edge of Lubbock at that time. The
church quickly grew, not only because of its location, but also because
it offered a fresh approach to ministry within the Baptist tradition. |

The church adopted a team approach
to ministry that focused on “every member being a minister.”
Folks from other denominational backgrounds were invited to join. People of all races were welcomed. |

This spirit of Christian inclusion has led the church to instigate many mission opportunities over the years. Second B founded the Sick Children’s Clinic in the 1960’s to offer free medical attention to needy children. It continues today to be administered and run by volunteers – most of whom are members of Second B. The church was supportive in founding SPARC (South Plains Aids Resource Center) and Lubbock’s Habitat for Humanity chapter during the 1980’s. |

Members of Second B were instrumental in helping to create and to support the South Plains Food Bank and Breedlove Dehydration Plant. In more recent days, My Father’s House of Lubbock was headquartered at Second B. This inclusive approach to missions continues with our involvement in the Lubbock Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Backyard Missions Ministry of Lubbock, Meals on Wheels and our extensive benevolence ministry. |

| Another area in which inclusive ministry has helped to define
Second Baptist within our community is our affirmation of women in ministry.
Second Baptist began ordaining women to its Diaconate in 1976. Today, our
Diaconate is 52% female. Second B ordained its first woman to the vocational
ministry, Rev. Dot Thompson, in 1982. Since then eight more women have been
ordained to the ministry. Women serve in all areas of leadership in the
church including chairs of divisions and committees, pastoral staff members,
adult teachers, and leaders in worship. As Second B continues to seek God’s will in the journey ahead, we are proud to be affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas. We are committed to sharing the love of Christ with the whole world –beginning right here in Lubbock. |
